Diversity, equality is good for business

Partners from across Europa gathered in Grimstad this week to discuss how to attract more women to high-tech industries.

“More women in business is good for business. We need to make more men aware of the economic importance of equality and diversity,” said Kamilla Fredriksen, member of TENK – a tech network for women.

“We are in the midst of a technological revolution that will bring profound changes to our society. Women are underrepresented in tech industries, which is unfortunate, as they miss out on the opportunity to shape the future,” said Fredriksen.

Among the 50 attendees at the FEMINA project’s convention at Strand Hotel Fevik Thursday and Friday, women – for once – dominated the room. Ten project partners from seven countries Spain, Italy, Romania, The Netherlands, Greece, Sweden and Norway, shared experiences and worked together to find ways to increase the number of women in high-tech jobs.

“In high-tech sectors across Europe, despite recent positive trends, gender differences are still significant. Only 33 per cent of researchers are women, concentrated largely in social and medical sciences. Female contribution is shown to contribute to research and innovation success. Studies suggest that closing the gender gap would generate an economic increase equivalent to a 13 per cent increase of GDP,” said Sara Bonci at Arezzo Innovazione in Italy.

This was the third convention for the EU funded project which aims to identify, implement, monitor and evaluate policy measures to break down gender barriers in entrepreneurship, career progression and public funding schemes for research and enterprise support. GCE NODE and NODE Eyde Women (NEW) hosted the convention titled “Gender Gap Closure = Value Creation”.

About the FEMINA project: 

A European project for increased female participation in high-tech industries.

Femina considers how to identify, implement, monitor and evaluate policy measures that break down barriers to female high-tech entrepreneurship, to employment and career progression in high-tech SMEs, and to the gender dimension of innovation in funding schemes for high-tech start-ups and SMEs.

The main outputs of the project are Action Plans, detailing these desired changes, which partners and selected stakeholders will implement and monitor over a 2-year period. The results of this implementation will benefit SMEs and the territory. An increase in female participation in high-tech entrepreneurship, employment and leadership should establish a culture of gender parity in these sectors, with impact on inclusive growth and regional competitiveness.

As the Advisory Partner, GCE NODE coordinates an Advisory Board comprised of Agder County Council, NODE Eyde Women (NEW) and Centre for Gender and Equality at the University of Agder. The Advisory Partner together with the Advisory Board contribute to the project through experience from program/policy development and research projects aimed at closing the gender gap.
